Nestlé Headquarters

1996 - 2000 · Suisse, Vevey · Administrative

The Nestlé Headquarters in Vevey is one of the most remarkable administrative buildings in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Completed in 1960, this major work of the architect Jean Tschumi was extended in 1975 and has been the object of diverse transformations or additions. The obsolescence of the technical installations and the evolution of functional demands clearly mandated an integral renovation of Tschumi’s building. The magnitude of this operation allowed for a wider revision of the project, which in turn resulted in the proposal for a new element to link the two buildings and thus enhance the unity and coherence of the whole. This intervention on a modern building (one listed in the Historical Monument inventory) poses new questions, particularly about the strategies of approach and the choice of means for intervention, in a complex situation combining different degrees of action such as the restoration, the transformation, and the creation of new elements.
