Hardturm Stadium
2012 - 2012 · Suisse, Zürich · Public » Sports & Leisure
The proposed project for the new Hardturm stadium in Zurich, located at the north-western gateway to the city, is a key element in the process of revitalising the neighbourhood. A new landmark at the western end of Pfingsweidstrasse, the stadium is the last remaining element of an urban fabric that dissolves into the parks along the Limmat River. Between the industrial zone to the south and the residential neighbourhood to the east, the project seeks to create a dialogue between two contrasting atmospheres. Shiny by day and translucent by night, the stadium offers the strong and recognisable image of a diamond with its perforated metal shell resting on a functional base. Connecting the complex to the domestic scale provided by the project's housing units to the northeast, this base houses the stadium entrances on the ground floor as well as the bars that enliven the Stadionplatz. The orientation of the stadium meets the standards of the main football federations based on optimal working conditions for television crews, but also on the obvious need to create a public space between the residential building and the stadium. In addition, the asymmetrical grandstand system, which is higher on the residential side, meets the need for visual and acoustic impermeability between two fundamentally opposed programmes.
