Atelier | Volta Conference
06/2022 · Suisse, Lausanne

As part of the activities of our Atelier, we had the pleasure to welcome Katrien Vertenten, co-founder of Nomos and main partner of the humanitarian architecture association Volta.

It was an opportunity to learn about their work and the projects related to health, education, emancipation, and ecology that they have been supporting and coordinating in Burkina Faso and Senegal since 2016 through their association. Volta enables humanitarian construction projects to be carried out in conjunction with NGOs present on the ground as well as with a team of architects and local workers. Their work is mainly based on the idea of architecture at the service of people where the architect plays an organizational and consultative role in order to accompanying the project. The donations received by Volta allow them to contribute locally to the construction of the projects, the activity of Volta's members being voluntary.
"The materials that make up a building, the way natural light falls on it, the way the air circulates in it, the way the vegetation invests it; these factors generate beauty and bring joy and dignity to those who inhabit it. Bringing these emotions through architecture can be the starting point for a better personal reconstruction."
