New Hajj City - Mecca

The project is inspired by the caravanserai, a fortification that offered shelter and provisions to Muslim pilgrims on their journey. It is organised according to a concentric ring structure: an outer ring of roads, a ring of dwellings and a central pedestrian park. The fortified appearance of the project highlights its relationship with the desert. Inside, there is a lush green space, in stark contrast to the aridity of the desert. This garden evokes an oasis: the refreshing shade of the trees, the streams, springs and reservoirs offer sensory pleasure, a metaphor for paradise.

New Hajj City - Mecca

New Hajj City - Mecca

2006 - 2006 · Saudi Arabia, Mecca · Urbanism

The city of Mecca is the main destination for the obligatory Hajj pilgrimage, a major event in Muslim culture. The growing demand for accommodation for pilgrims highlights the need to build new infrastructure to solve this problem. The project is located in an isolated, desert area surrounded by mountains, just 3 km from the city. This hyper-functional mega-hotel city meets the programme's requirements: a basic fact of the project is that pilgrims generally come from all over the world, creating a cultural and social mix. With a 40-day visa, they generally wish to stay in Mecca for the entire period. As the Hajj lasts only five days, the rest of the stay is devoted to social and commercial relations between pilgrims.
